ATTRACTIONS & PLACES TO VISIT AND EXPLORE IN JAISALMER

You should travel to Jaisalmer if geology is your area of interest. Aakal, also known as the Wood Fossil Park, lies about 15 kilometres from the city. Geologic catastrophes that happened in the Thar Desert 180 million years ago may be found and traced here. The Indian border in western Rajasthan is also guarded by the city of Jaisalmer. The Thar Desert and the border are both not far from this “Golden City.” The Jaisalmer Fort, popularly known as Sonar Qila, is the most notable monument in the city (Golden Fort). Jaisalmer Fort is not merely a tourist destination, in contrast to the majority of other forts in India. In addition to historic havelis (homes), it also has stores and hotels.

JAISALMER FORT

The Jaisalmer Fort is also known as Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) because it rises from the desert and appears to merge with the sand’s golden tones. The fort is shrouded in mystery as the sun sets, adding its own special charm. Local artisans build the fort in the traditional manner of the royals. This fort is a World Heritage Site and features prominently in Satyajit Ray’s Sonar Kela, a movie based on one of his well-known Feluda stories (The Golden Fortress).

SALIM SINGH KI HAVELI

A portion of this haveli, which was erected in the first half of the 18th century, is still inhabited by the original occupants’ descendants. Peacock-shaped brackets that have been sculpted serve to support the tall, arched roof. According to legend, there were two more wooden storeys that would have brought it to the same height as the Maharaja’s palace, but he ordered the upper level to be destroyed.

PATWON KI HAVEL

This five-story haveli, one of Jaisalmer’s biggest and most intricately carved ones, stands out in a winding roadway. Even though the haveli has lost part of its former splendour, the inside walls still display some paintings and mirror work art.

DESERT NATIONAL PARK

The Thar desert’s environment and its diverse fauna are best seen at the Desert National Park. Sand dunes that sway, sharp rocks, salt lake bottoms that are thick, and intermedial regions make up the Park. The Park is home to several different types of wildlife, including black deer, chinkara, and desert fox. Here you may also view the Great Indian Bustard, one of the largest flying birds in the world and one of the most endangered species. The park is home to a staggering array of migrating raptors in the winter, including Saker Falcons, Himalayan and Eurasian Griffon Vultures, and Eastern Imperial Eagles.
